I will be focusing on Grey’s Anatomy and the reason for it is that I like watching this show because not only does it have humor and romance, but it shows and talks about the different types of diseases many people have around the world and how much the doctors must work as a team to make sure they break down the information they have acquire and make sure they find a cure to help save the lives of their patients that walk in and out of there hospital everyday. The reason people watch sad shows is for therapeutic reasons. It’s proven to helps deal with difficult emotions. Some of the most known characters in this show are Ellen Pompeo, Justin Chambers, Chandra Wilson,Patrick Dempsey ect… This show first premiered on ABC on March 27,2005 and is one of the longest running shows on ABC.
In this episode, Shepherd is involved in an accident while attempting to help the victims of a car accident. He is later pronounced brain dead, due to the surgeons not providing him with a timely CT scans. Dr Shepard was driving to the airport when he saw an accident that happened right in front of him. he stops and starts to help, but the first 15 minutes is full of false alarms. This happened because a sports car try to get around Dr Shepard and eventually did not see the on coming traffic which was a SUV. the two cars crashed and altogether Shepherd survives the accident in front of him he’s medical experience sprigged into action. He first heads over to the bigger vehicle the SUV which had a daughter and also a mother. One of the passengers involved thinks she is dead, but doctor Shepard tells her she is alive because she has a pulse which means she is not dead. As Shepard heads to the hospital a semi-truck hit’s his car.When he is arriving at a hospital they don’t want to take him. The hospital wants to reject him as a patient because they’re not built for trauma and are not prepared for situations like this. The EMTs insist that they accept Shepard as a patient and so Derek gets wheeled into the emergency room where he is not taken great care of which eventually leads to his death not because of his heart, but brain dead.
The analysis for this episode is to show how everything can change in a matter of seconds. One-second you could be feeling very good and the next you could be laying down on a hospital bed with your life on the line. In society many don’t really realize how short life could be and don’t appreciate every second that you live. Life is short and what makes it even more scary is that you don’t know when your time will come. People fight and tent to be mad over something that isn’t even a big thing and that is time wasted where you could’ve done something that would’ve made someone else happy or more important you happy. According to donerrecovery.org it states that “Brain death occurs when a person has an irreversible, catastrophic brain injury, which causes total cessation of all brain function (the upper brain structure and brain stem). Brain death is not a coma or persistent vegetative state. Brain death is determined in the hospital by one or more physicians not associated with a transplantation team.” Brain death is very serious and as of right now there is no way of recovering from it. Brain death is considered dead because eventually your heart will stop and the only thing that the machine does it keep your organs alive while they are extracted and used to help others if considered an organ donor. This is what happened to Dr. Shepard because of the bad treatment and lack of equipment and training. The long-running television westernGunsmoke, which aired on CBS from 1955 to 1975, flourished in a Cold War society, where U.S. Marshal Matt Dillon (James Arness) stood up to lawlessness in defense of civilization.” Grey’s Anatomy airs on ABC and is a medical series where it tackles very dangerous disease and also the life of doctors where they try to the. best of their ability to help a patient live another day. This series has been running for very long time from March of 2005 – present.
One of the best episodes of Grey’s Anatomy is called “Death and All His Friends”. This episode is the season finally of season 6 where one of the husbands wife died where Chief Shepard took the decision to turn off the machine that was the only thing that was keeping her alive without the consent of the husband. The husband (Garry Clark) wanted revenge by filling a law suit towards Seattle Grace Mercy West Hospital and when that didn’t work he went inside and started a hospital shootout where not only did he kill a lot of doctors and attendants, but he failed to kill Chief Shepard which was the person who took the decision to turn off the machine and put her to rest. This not only brings there friends and coworkers into a shock, but this also brought them closer because after the shootout everyone started to appreciate life and also brought then more closer then anyone has ever been.
As for this season finally of season 6 this episode brought many friendships and relationships to an end. This episode shows how many friends and family’s loose love ones everyday in the hospital dude to either age or disease. Many people feel like the doctors don’t do much to save there patients lives, but in reality they try everything the can to make sure they live another day. Many lives are lost and this episodes explains and shows the struggles doctors go through everyday at a hospital. Not all deaths are caused by doctors, but by the hospital. “In 1999, the Institute of Medicine published the famous according to Propublica.org. Another reason of cause of death is lack of care.”In 2010, the Office of Inspector General for Health and Human Services said that bad hospital care contributed to the deaths of 180,000 patients in Medicare alone in a given year.” Everyone makes mistakes, but as for doctors making a mistake can cause the life of their patient which is unacceptable. In Acting Out Culture, Roles is ” how people react in relation to their standing or environment. “In 2016 and 2017, 11,000 people were treated in the Kaiser Permanente system for firearm injuries. Those were the victims that at least made it to a medical facility. Scores of victims don’t. That’s why the task force is trying to obtain death certificate data, to get a clearer picture of all those that died from gun violence. This will be foundational to their research.” Kaiser Permanente has a tase force that is helping with reducing the amount of gun injuries when patients come to the hospital. Although it is hard to control gun violence the task force is coming up with data from people who have died in the past to help future patients so they won’t die from past losses and to help better understand gun shoots in the body and how to get around it without killing the patients.
Drowning on Dry land is one of the most scariest and most dramatic episodes ever on Grey’s Anatomy where the main character “Ellen Pompeo” drowns because one of people from the ferry that crashed pushed her by accident and fell into the cold water of the river. This episode is very special because it shows love by brings Dr. Shepard and her love Meredith Grey and brings them together and also brings drama. Accidents happen and that is what happened when Meredith Grey almost lost her life, but when It comes to her co workers they worked around the clock to make sure she came back to life. Izzie who is also one of the main characters preformed an emergency surgery on site where it had never been done before. She used any available resources she had on the site and eventually rescued the injured patient from the ferry.
The drama is very important in this show because there is a lot of love scenes and also shows how friends are broken and made. This show also is very informative because it talks about the different scenarios doctors go though even outside the hospital. Doctors don’t always do surgery in hospitals, but they also do surgery outside the hospital and all though doctors do everything they can with the limited amount of supplies they always try there best. Studies have shown that surgery’s “Your personal health history (including diabetes, breathing problems, and smoking history), age, weight, family health history and your general state of health will directly impact your personal level of risk when having surgery.” All of this will affect your surgery, but research states that there is only a five percent chance of death which may sound small, but anything can go wrong in a few seconds. In Acting Out Culture it states “In the time since seatbelts first appeared in cars many small changes to our car culture have made wearing them a good thing to do.” The connection I’m trying to make is that we wear seatbelts because it keeps us safe and at the beginning we found then useless and not worth it, but overtime it became a thing which in this case surgery has become a standard procedure that the risk could be a little high, but many don’t dye which is consider safe depending on the type of procedure you are going under.
Golden Hour is an episode that is dedicated to doctors and it shows the audience how doctors prepared for surgery. This episode also shows the audience how they dress and why they dress that way follow by how doctors properly disinfect themselves before a surgery. This goes to tell you how serious things can get in an emergency room. The intensity is quite breathtaking and scary. In medicine one hour is called golden hour which means it is either life or death. One hour can change everything forever. An hour can save your life. An hour can change your mind. An hour can pronounce you dead.
As for the summary for this episode it shows how much preparation it takes to get someone ready for surgery. Surgery is very scary and life treating and so many know the risk involved in surgery. Research shows that ” With regard to emergency trauma care, a few minutes can mean the difference between life and death. This first hour of definitive medical care is called the “golden hour.” It is usually this first hour where the patient’s medical fate is sealed. In general, the faster that medical care is rendered, the better the medical outcome will be” according to Ron Clark, MD a Physician. Golden hour is everything in a hospital and the quicker you get medical attention the higher the chance you will get to see another day. The first hour can lead to a heart attack or stroke which is not the ideal situation you would want a loved one to be in. Not all hospital have the equipment to treat your patient so they might have to do a transfer which isn’t good, but is the only thing they can do. During a transfer it is actually more risky cause more time the lower the chance you’ll live. The reason people watch sad shows is for therapeutic reasons but not only does it helps deal with difficult situations like emotion or fear, but its a way for someone to recover from something that is affecting his or her life due to either something very tragic. This is a way of healing for some like therapy and it helps them gain confidence in which they had lost.“Writing about grief was somewhat therapeutic for me, although I didn’t realize it at the time”. “In The Leftovers, grief is a complex phenomenon, experienced by people in very different ways — some cope through ritual, others try to deny it and still others use it as a fuel for social and personal transformation.
